Why should I take one of these motorcycle training courses?
Our courses provide a safe, structured, and enjoyable environment to learn the physical and mental skills required for confident motorcycle riding. After successful completion, you’ll receive a DMV skills test waiver, allowing you to skip both the written and riding tests at the DMV. You’ll also earn a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) completion card, which qualifies you for a motorcycle insurance discount in Tennessee.
What if I only plan to ride a scooter?
Scooters are available at select locations. Please contact our office to reserve one. You may also bring your own registered and insured scooter (under 500cc) to any 2-wheel Basic RiderCourse (BRC).
What happens if I don’t pass the knowledge test?
If you do not pass the knowledge test, you may retake it once without repeating the entire course.
What happens if I don’t pass the skills test?
Some riders need extra time to master essential skills. Based on your RiderCoach’s recommendation, you may retake only the skills evaluation, all range exercises, or a portion of them. Contact our office after your class to review retake options. Discounted retake rates are available, and you may come on standby or schedule a retake at a reduced price.
Who administers these motorcycle safety courses?
Mid Tenn Motorcycle Education Center administers the courses in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Safety and the State of Tennessee Motorcycle Rider Education Program (MREP). All curricula follow Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) standards. Every RiderCoach is MSF-certified, and most are state-licensed. Coaches are routinely evaluated by MSF and state inspectors to ensure high training standards.
Do I automatically pass if I take the class?
No. While our nationally certified RiderCoaches work hard to help every student succeed, passing is based on performance. Our success rate is high, and discounted retake fees are available if needed. Please note, course fees are non-refundable.
What is provided in the Basic RiderCourse?
We supply training motorcycles and classroom materials. Helmets are not provided. The Basic RiderCourse includes an online eCourse, classroom instruction, and riding exercises covering motorcycle types, risk management, protective gear, pre-ride inspections, controls, safe riding strategies, braking, swerving, and special riding conditions.
What should I bring to class?
You must bring a long-sleeve shirt or jacket, sturdy long pants, over-the-ankle footwear, full-fingered gloves, and a DOT-approved helmet with eye protection. If rain is expected, please bring rain gear. You must also bring your eCourse completion certificate, plus water, snacks, and something to sit on during breaks.
What is the MSF eCourse and where do I find it?
The eCourse covers the MSF Rider Handbook and prepares you for your in-person training. It must be completed before attending class. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with the eCourse link. The online course takes approximately 5 hours.
Do I need prior motorcycle experience before attending?
No previous motorcycle experience is required, but you must be able to balance a two-wheeled vehicle. If you haven’t ridden a bicycle recently, practice beforehand to ensure stability during class.
Can I take the course if I am under 18?
Students aged 15–18 must have a parent or legal guardian present on Saturday morning to sign the course waiver. Without a parent/guardian present, you cannot participate. We recommend reviewing the Tennessee Motorcycle Manual and state requirements for minor riders.
Do I need to bring my own motorcycle?
Training motorcycles are provided for all Basic RiderCourse students. For the Experienced RiderCourse/BRC II, you must bring your own licensed and insured motorcycle or rent one from us for $99.
Are there tests during the course?
Yes. Students complete a written test and a riding skills evaluation. All material is taught and reviewed before testing. Verbal testing is available for those with reading or language difficulties.
Will I receive my motorcycle license after the class?
Upon completion, you will receive an MSF completion card for insurance discounts and military base access. You will also receive a state certificate that waives the DMV knowledge and skills tests. Bring your certificate and required identification to the DMV to add the motorcycle endorsement to your license.
How long does the course take?
Times may vary based on class size, progression, weather, and scheduling.
2-Wheel & 3-Wheel Basic RiderCourse: ~16 hours (5 hours online + 11 hours on-range)
2-Wheel Experienced RiderCourse/BRC II: ~10 hours (4 hours online + 6 hours on-range)
What is your refund policy?
Cancellations: Cancel at least 10 business days before class to receive a refund minus the eCourse and processing fees.
Rescheduling: Notify us at least 3 days before class. Less than 3 days’ notice requires a rescheduling fee.
Retakes: Students who do not pass or leave class may retake the next available session at a discounted rate.
